Stepping out in London: Bagel shops in Brick Lane

December 20, 2011

Any bagel fans out there? If so, boy, do I got a place for you.

I live in Brick Lane, at the edge of the imaginary line that divides Central and East London.  Brick Lane is known for its extensive variety of restaurants offering South Asian cuisine and a trendy row of bars and shops where Londoners spend their time and money.
But Brick Lane also has bagels. Lots of yummy, freshly baked bagels.
 I believe it was Liebling who first introduced me to the bagel shops dotted along the Brick Lane strip when I spent last summer in London.  I haven’t had one since my triumphant return two months ago, so we swung by Beigel Bake as we were walking home from eating dinner out in Shoreditch, another trendy area just north of Brick Lane.

I admit that the overall look of Beigel Bake is far from enticing: the grubby interior was tackily decorated and a jumbled mass of bagels assaulted the eye.  Along with plain bagels, they also sell bagels with assorted fillings, the bagels pre-stuffed and stacked in the most unattractive of  ways.

Still, despite my trepidation, the baked goods smelled heavenly.  Liebling ordered a half-dozen for the paltry sum of 1.50 GBP (approx $2.20 USD), and on our walk back home, I devoured one to my utter surprise.  After having eaten dinner not even 30 minutes before, I was far from hungry, but the bagel was so spongy and tasty that I couldn’t help myself. The next morning, I found myself looking forward to having another bagel for breakfast. Even 12 hours later, it still tasted fresh.

 The moral of the story: Don’t judge a book by its cover!  I know where I’ll be going for my next bagel fix.

I know where that is! I feel so in the know…now if only I'd actually eaten one of their bagels, it would have been perfect.

Oh my, thank heavens this carb-addict lives far, far away from Brick Lane:)
Oneika I beleive a baked potato with some kind of stuffing is a quintessential Brit dish, you simply MUST try it with a crayfish-mayo stuffing or tuna-sweetcorn. yum.
Or even plain with warm melted butter and a little salt.:)

There is nothing better than falling out of a pub and into brick lane for a drunken bagel.

Glad you discovered a bit of a cockney secret :)

That's great that you went there! It's such an iconic place in London. I'm embarrassed to say that after 4 years in this city, I have yet to go. We'll have to make a trip together sometime!

@Alero: Agree! This is dangerous…

@Emily: Look at you, Ms. Londoner! You'll just have to come back so you can try one (or six)… Your first half dozen are on me lol! #bigspender

@Brenna: Haha! Get the to a fridge, lady!

@Terri: Sounds like a West Indian style bagel! Nice!!

@kvowels: Did you have your bagel yet?? I hope it was good!

@Anon: Tuna and mayo sound great but not too keen on the sweetcorn! I really should do a taste test for the blog. You are giving me ideas… :)

@Linda: Thanks for reading and commenting! Try those bagels and let me know how you liked them! Happy holidays!

@Hannah: I LOVE onion, but then my mouth reeks for hours afterward so I am conflicted lol.

@ramblinbess: Cute huh!?

@sprite: Thanks for the tip! I haven't had much typical English food since my arrival so thanks for the rec! Will try it in the new year!

@Andi: Me too! If only carbs werent so bad for you!

@Jorden: Indeed! The area is laced with tons of bars and clubs as well, so I might have to indulge in the tradition in the new year!

@Lady: Let's definitely make a date and go there!

@Jaime: One of the best things in life!!

Interestingly enough, there is a dating website advertised on the jubliee line with various places to have dates in London, and one suggestion is 'bagels in brick lane.' It didn't make sense to me until now.
