Off to Malta on Friday (and other travel updates)

We are off to Malta on Friday!

Never heard of this  destination?
It’s a tiny European island south of Sicily and east of the North African nation of Tunisia.  Liebling and I are going for a long weekend, leaving Friday night and returning Monday evening.

Why Malta?
Why not? You know that we can’t stay put in one place for long, and that despite a recent trip to Berlin, we were itching to go somewhere new. Result: we booked a whole bunch of tickets to some destinations, including Malta, that we are really excited about.

So where are we going in the coming months?
So far, we’ve booked trips to Berlin, Brussels, Belgium, Paris, Nice/Monaco, and Norway.  We have a couple of other trips in the works, but they haven’t been confirmed yet.

Were the tickets expensive? How did you find them?
Nope, not really! We save a lot of money by booking WAYYYY in advance (we’re not going to Norway until June!) and being flexible with our travel dates. We have been internet fiends, scoping out a variety of booking sites in the quest to get the cheapest tickets. Which sites can we recommend?  If you are interested in Europe travel, we’ve found the Swoodoo (a German booking website) can’t be beat.  We are going to Brussels and Paris on the Eurostar train, and I was able to snag a 69 GBP return ticket to Brussels simply by not travelling during peak times.  Eurostar also frequently has promotions were you can save 10% on regular priced tickets- you just have to look on their website!

Anyway, I can’t wait to share my photos and anecdotes with you.  Have any of you been to the destinations above? I would love some restaurant or itinerary recommendations if you have them!

*I also realize that I am behind on some of my travel updatage.  I never finished writing about my trips to Guatemala, Chile, and New York City, and haven’t even touched on trips I did months ago to Singapore and Malaysia.  I also have a few posts about Liebling’s visit to Canada. So stay tuned!

Do you have any travel coming up at the end of this year or in 2012?  Where are you going? Where do you want to go?  And how do you book your tickets? Any tips for travellers?

Psst! Don’t forget to “like” me on Facebook if you haven’t already! Your support is much appreciated!

Wow! Let me say that again – WOW!! You've got some amazing trips planned!! I'm headed to Tokyo for a few days later this month, then on Dec. 26, I'll be off to the Netherlands and Belgium for two weeks! I'm really excited about this trip!!

For summer 2012, I plan to spend a few weeks traveling around Sweden and Finland (mainly the former.) I really would like to make this happen. I've been gradually saving money for the past two years for a special trip somewhere. It'll be a 30th bday present to myself.

YAY for Malta! I have been eyeing that place all year. Recommended my bestie go and she had an amazing time and I know you will too!

As you know JA on my list for the end of the year and starting to think about what I can add to the list for 2012.

Safe travels!

Sigh!! I haven't been to western Europe in so long. I think one of the fabulous things about Europe is the fact that you can go to so many different countries so easily and quickly. We are in the process of planning a larger trip for April. Actually I need to stop reading blogs and go do that! :)

I'm so jealous that you're going to Malta. You're going to have such a good time there! I'm heading to Brazil and Austria before the end of the year, and Ireland in January. I need to book some more trips for the rest of 2012, though. Your list has inspired me!

Can't wait till you post on both Malta and Singapore!! :D

I'm going to Texas in January…to San Antonio and Austin, the most liberal cities in that state. Should be fun!

Of course, I'm dreaming of Europe always…

That's so awesome, I've never been ANY of those places!

IC and I are headed to the US in a week and a half to visit my family for Christmas. I don't really consider "going home" a holiday or travel though which is pretty crazy since it's 22 hours of travel to get there :)

oh wow! major travel envy! i made a goal on my birthday this year that going forward to travel at least 3 times a year – once internationally, once within canada, and once in the US (tons of cities I want to visit) – so far my travel schedule for 2012 includes: Thailand (possibly – in January), Ireland in June, Nova Scotia? or Newfoundland August and Chicgao in November.

I'd also love to add Turkey somewhere into 2012. VERY excited :) Love your travel tips – I'll be sure to check out that site for european airfares.

wow, that is quite a list!! If you need any advice for Berlin let me know, I have been many many times!

so for me I have nothing more planned than a 3 week roadtrip from Melbourne to Sydney and back over christmas / new years. and I guess next year it will be mostly travel in australia and maybe new zealand :)

in europe try the cheap low cost airlines such as easy jet. yes they are often delayed and have the weirdest rules, but they do offer good prices!!!

Wow, looks like you've got a busy schedule. And working too? I'm hitting a few spots before the end of the year and it looks like I'll be running around Italy and Spain – literally – in the early months of 2012.

@Nicole: We SO need to do a blogger trip to Iceland! I'm so down. Looking forward to connecting in Berlin and I'm excited for your trip to Japan! Swoodoo is great- Liebling introduced me to it.

@Diana: That's so exciting! When do you leave Belgium? I'll be in Brussels January 4 to 5. It would be so cool to meet up! Oh, and I"m turning 30 next year too!

@April: I see a lot of island hopping in your future!! Say hi to JA for me, my dad lives there but I haven't been in eons!

@Rhona: Um wow! That sounds A-MAZ-ING. Is it late 2012 then?

@Terri: Where are you off to, lady? I love Europe for that purpose- it's super small and super cheap to get around and explore.

@Lady: I am inspired by you! I'm sure that you'll soon have a LONG list of destinations for 2012 on the go!

@Mandy/Amanda: Thanks! You know I will.. :-)

@Lara: Thanks!

@Ashley: I have flown through Dallas/Fortworth aiport at least a dozen times and yet have never seen Texas! I really need to get on that. Just posted on Singapore and Malta posts are coming next week!

@Deidre: Crazy that it's such a long flight to get there! Safe travels!

@Emily: Done and done!

@Bonnie: Thanks for commenting!! Will check out your blog!

@kay: Ooh! When you're going to Ireland, you must let me know- maybe I'll tag along!!

@Kristina: I agree with you on Easyjet. EVen though it's late, I still prefer it to RyanAir, which is not very nice at all! Your road trips sound exciting. I would love to make it back to Australia and do it properly since the last time I went was for work. My boyfriend is from Berlin but I'm always open to restaurant recommendations!

@Monique: Are you doing the Madrid half-marathon?! When is that? And your travel list is QUITE impressive. I'm looking forward to your blogs!

@Leeann: I am blessed to be doing what I love to do! Thank you!

If I'm in Norway when you touch down in June, I'd be happy to show you around the city … if you're coming to Oslo, that is.

Oneika December 30, 2011 at 5:04 pm

@Shells: Darn it! I'll be in Bergen! Thanks for the offer though!

Reply

Shells December 30, 2011 at 11:09 pm

Oh, Bergen! The city of rain. Why did you guys choose Bergen? Not that anything is wrong with it, but it does get a lot of rain. It's the one city in Norway that gets the most rain each year so don't forget your umbrellas. Hope you guys have a great time though. Let me know if there's anything about Norway (or its culture) you're wondering about! :)

Shells December 30, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Oh and I forgot to mention the most important thing: It's VEEERY expensive here so walk with more cash than you usually budget for your trips!

Oneika December 31, 2011 at 6:18 am

@Shells: Liebling was dead set on going to Bergen because of the fjords, I think. I know nothing about Norway so I just went along with the plan :) Have heard that it is crazy expensive so will have to make sure to save my pennies! Will hit you up for more recommendations!! Thanks!

No probs. Happy to help. There's not a lot I can help with since you guys are going to Bergen (and there's much about Bergen that's unfamiliar to me though I've been there countless of times), but if you have any practical questions about Norway in general, feel free to ask.

I'm always willing to help out a fellow traveller, especially a sister AND a fellow "country woman". :)

Bergen in and of itself is not so "fjordy", but its a good startpoint to other places that are. It's also a pretty city in its own right if only it would stop bloody raining for a second! Ugh. I'm really crossing my fingers for you guys when it comes to the weather!

It's likely, being such prolific and savvy travellers, that you have already discovered this one your own, but just in case you haven't yet, there's a lovely little trip called Norway in a Nutshell that every visitor to the country should try and experience if they can.

Its an all day trip that takes you through breath taking fjords, magnificent countryside, quaint little villages and roaring waterfalls by train, boat, bus, mountain buggy (a little train that's several hundred metres above sea level — AWESOME views!) then train again.

It's called Norway in a nutshell because it gives you an amazing taste of what the country has to offer if you're pressed for time.

Its highly popular and perfect for the traveller who's just in town for a few days or who doesn't have the inclination to travel around the country to see all the wonderful sights. It ain't cheap (last time I heard the price was around 2500kr (250-300 pounds) per person), but so worth it if you can afford it.

I took my mom, my ex, several other family members and friends on it when they came to visit, and it was the highlight of their trip. They still rave about it to this day.

I'm only familiar with the departure from Oslo, but I think there's also a departure from out of Bergen too. Just google "Norway in Nutshell trip" to learn more.

Otherwise, if that's not an option, try to take a tour to Preikestolen (Preacher's Chair). I'm thinking this place is closer to Stavanger than Bergen, but I'm sure you can find organized tours that'll take you there.

Preikestolen is actually nothing more than a cliff (a piece of rock really) overlooking a fjord, but its an amazing view — GREAT for pics! Not for the squeamish though, or anyone who's afraid of heights because its a good way up. Also be in good shape as the hike up there can be taxing.

There's also a cruise along the fjord the Chair overlooks so that's an alternative if heights isn't your cuppa. I believe the fjord is called Sognefjord, if I remember correctly. The most famous fjord in Norway.

Whatever you guys do I hope the weather holds out! All these places look a whole lot better in sunshine.
