Scenes from Montenegro

Post image for Scenes from Montenegro

We’re currently spending 9 days in the Balkan region of Europe and our first stop is Montenegro.

This past weekend we flew into Dubrovnik, Croatia and then took a private taxi across the border into Montenegro. The decision to travel to Montenegro was mine. I wanted to travel somewhere cheap, scorching hot, and not too far from London.  For a split second we thought about going to Russia, then vetoed the idea when we realized it didn’t fit any of the aforementioned criteria.  Instead, the Balkans came to mind.  We did a sailing trip in northern Croatia a few years before — while I didn’t enjoy sailing part of it, I really dug Croatia’s overall vibe and I knew that I wanted to return at some point to tour the surrounding areas. Montenegro has always piqued my interest for some reason, I’m not sure why.  So when I discovered its geographic proximity to Dubrovnik I realized that this would be a prime opportunity to visit. We spent three days in the quaint, coastal town of Kotor, making a day trip to the comparatively larger and busier Budva.  Some pics of our adventures in this country are below.

Have you ever been to Montenegro?  Is it on your radar?

Ohhhhh Oneika, you have made me want to travel to Montenegro now. My mother-in-law was born in Kotor and wants to take me there & I have always been unsure – until now. It looks so much better than I had ever thought. Great photos, especially the one on the beach where you are in blue. Just magically.

I didn’t want to gush but Kotor is just magical. Go if you have the chance!

We are looking at this for next Summer with our kids – did you like it as much as/better than Croatia? Is it cheaper?

Oneika July 16, 2013 at 10:25 pm

From what I’ve seen it is wayyyy cheaper! Very similar in terms of scenery and food!

Montenegro has been on my map for a while – I actually worked on a piece where my producer had to travel there for interviews and I was jealous of the scenery on the tapes she brought back. I must say though – that beach does NOT look like the business! Was the sand as rocky and pebbly as it looked? Also – how were you perceived there? My coworker told me she got a lot of stares and she’s a young blonde woman. I’ve been concerned about that in regards to Montenegro.

Oneika July 18, 2013 at 9:59 pm

Haha yes!! Very pebbly and rocky and Liebling was complaining the whole time! This is not a place that you come to for the beaches, but it’s still nice to have the option to lie on a beach. :-) No problems in Montenegro at all, people have been extremely nice and welcoming, though in Budva a lady told me she was going to give me a discount because I was black and she thought my skin was beautiful. :-)

Even James Bond was there in “Casino Royale” (although it was filmed in the Czech Republic).

Oh my word, I’m so excited now.

I travel to Montenegro and Albania in about three weeks with my best friend, who is of Albanian descent and has a lot of family there. We’ll be staying with her family.

I will admit, I was slightly nervous to visit Eastern Europe as a black woman, but not as nervous anymore.

I’m pretty excited that I’ll be there to see the beautiful places and people.

How was the food?

This is a place I’ve never even considered visiting. It looks great from your pics though! I wonder if I’ll ever take a proper trip around my home continent!

The traditional Hollywood studios can’tdetermine specifically whatpeopleprefer or can getas they have prior to now. Whenever you additionally distribution internet and headlines sites, from chat to complete motion pictures. It is just a totally new society. A lot of it fantastic, some not.
